Who we are · Since 2017

Mizani is Swahili for balance.

Whole people build whole communities.

Since 2017, Mizani Concept has believed one thing deeply: a young person who is whole has everything they need to change their world. Then they go and support their communities in building their regenerative dream.

We create the conditions for young people to become fully themselves.

We run mentorship camps, holistic wellness sessions and educator capacity building across Kenya. We work with teens, pre-teens and the teachers who are with them every day.

Everything we do is shaped by two ideas: the whole person model and the 4Cs of regeneration.

Our core model

The whole person: all four dimensions

Young people must be cared for completely. Not just academically, not just physically, but across every dimension of what it means to be human.

1

Physical

Body health, movement, nutrition, hygiene and dignity. For girls this includes menstrual health and practical support such as sanitary pads and hygiene packs.

  • SDG 3
  • SDG 5
2

Emotional

Emotional intelligence, self-awareness and resilience. Safe spaces where young people can be honest about who they are.

  • SDG 3
  • SDG 16
3

Social

Relationships, belonging, identity and community. Belonging is not a bonus. It is a basic need.

  • SDG 10
  • SDG 16
4

Mental

Critical thinking, focus, learning and intellectual confidence. Without mental wellness, curricula do not land.

  • SDG 4
  • SDG 3

In their own words

"Mizani means balance."

Kate, the founder of Mizani, and Sydney Leajore, a Conservation Education Officer, talk about mentoring teens on their physical, emotional, social and mental health, and about teaching young people to conserve the environment and its biodiversity through games and hands-on tools.

Our guiding framework

The 4Cs of regeneration

The 4Cs are not subjects we teach. They are a way of seeing and being in the world, woven into every session, camp and curriculum.

Culture

Knowing where you come from gives you the foundation to go anywhere. We help young Kenyans root themselves in identity, heritage and pride.

Community

No one thrives alone. We cultivate responsibility to family, peers and neighbours, so personal growth flows outward into collective good.

Commerce

Economic dignity matters. Financial literacy, entrepreneurial thinking and the confidence to build livelihoods that keep wealth in communities.

Conservation

Kenya's land, water and ecosystems are the foundation of human flourishing. We grow stewards of the environment, not just its consumers.

The 4Cs framework is inspired by the work of Barbara Joubert at Regeneration Station. Mizani applies these four lenses through its own approach to holistic youth development in Kenya.

Global goals

Locally rooted. Globally aligned.

Our work connects to ten UN Sustainable Development Goals. When a young person in Kenya becomes whole and equipped, the world moves closer to these goals, one person and one community at a time.

  • Goal 1 No poverty
  • Goal 3 Good health and wellbeing
  • Goal 4 Quality education
  • Goal 5 Gender equality
  • Goal 6 Clean water and sanitation
  • Goal 8 Decent work and growth
  • Goal 10 Reduced inequalities
  • Goal 11 Sustainable communities
  • Goal 13 Climate action
  • Goal 16 Peace, justice and institutions
